Martin Luther

Two individuals with the name of MARTIN LUTHER have left their marks on human mind and society. The details of these individuals are as under:

  1. Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, priest, author, composer, Augustinian monk, and a seminal figure in the Reformation  who forever changed Christianity, sparking the Protestant Reformation.

Luther was ordained to the priesthood in 1507. He came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church; in particular, he disputed the view on indulgences. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences. His theology challenged the authority and office of the pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge  .

His translation of the Bible into the German vernacular (instead of Latin) made it more accessible to the commoners /lay people, an event that had a tremendous impact on both the church and German culture. His marriage to  a former nun, set a model for the practice of clerical marriage, allowing Protestant clergy to marry. In two of his later works, Luther expressed antagonistic, violent views towards Jews and called for the burnings of their synagogues and their deaths.

King participated in and led marches for Blacks’ right to votedesegregationlabor rights, and other basic civil rights and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC.. King helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

.King is best known for advancing civil rights (especially of the Blacks)  through nonviolence and civil disobedience. FBI agents investigated him for possible communist ties, recorded his extramarital liaisons and reported on them to government officials, and, in 1964, mailed King a threatening anonymous letter, which he interpreted as an attempt to make him commit suicide.

On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.

In 1968, King was assassinated on April 4. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. citiesAllegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting.

Both Matins left an inedible mark on the society, as they braved out-of-the box propositions / solutions to the prevalent orthodox religious and political clergy’s dispositions.  Innovators and fresh thinkers are charting the road of human evolution.
