January 26th is Australia’s National Day.

On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip guides a fleet of 11 British ships carrying CONVICTS to the colony of New South Wales, effectively founding Australia, expanding the British Empire, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain there-in. Australia, once known as New South Wales, was originally planned as a PENAL COLONY of CONVICTS & CRIMINALS of the British Empire.

In recent times, Australia Day has become increasingly CONTROVERTIAL. 26 January 1788 marks the start of when the continent’s Indigenous people were gradually dispossessed of their land as WHITE COLONIZATION spread across the continents.

In October 1786, the British government appointed Arthur Phillip, captain of the HMS Sirius, and commissioned him to establish an agricultural work camp there in Australia for British convicts. Nonetheless, accompanied by a small contingent of Marines and other officers, Phillip led his 1,000-strong party, of whom more than 700 were convicts, around to Australia. Initially flogging and hangings were commonplace and effective instruments of coercion and enforcing desired discipline among the indigenous population and the convicts.                                                                                                                                                            As Australia became a sovereign nation, 26 Jan became the national holiday known as Australia Day. Many Aboriginal Australians call it “Invasion Day.”

Human history is replete with such controversies and conflicts. But the victors write and celebrate the history. So, all the successes of the European Colonialists, are celebrated with zest and zeal, ignoring what the plundered and looted uncivilized of the ‘Other’ world have to say.

As sense is prevailing and the feelings of superiority and self-righteousness are gradually diminishing, even the great grand sons and daughters are the captors and criminals are now realizing the wrongs their forefathers have perpetuated.
